Continuing Nursing Education (CNE)

CNE is committed to providing a balanced nursing educational program that promotes the integration of knowledge to nursing care. The educational opportunities provided reflect the needs of a multicultural work force, with emphasis and sensitivity towards the Kuwait Culture. The goals of the program are:

  • To ensure that all nurses employed at SIH participate in continuing Nursing education to function as professionals in serving the nursing care needs of all patients and the community at large.
  • To ensure a uniform standard of nursing skills and practice thus ensuring excellence in-patient care.
  • To ensure all SIH nurses can critically reflect on and evaluate the effects of their nursing care and are guided by ethical principles and professional standards of care.

The CNE department is responsible to promote staff participation in Continuing Education and updates own program on C.E. by completing the set number of hours required as per the Nursing Education Department policy.Works productively on committees by contributing knowledge and information to achieve set goals and objectives.Participates in the activities of Nursing and other Departments and supports and encourages other department staff to be involved.Participates in promoting good customer relations with patients, staff, medical staff, and visitors by using good communication skills.Works together with other support services to maintain a clean and safe environment for staff and patients by following the guidelines as set by these departments.

The Orientation process at Al Salam International Hospital occurs in three phases; General Hospital Orientation, General Nursing Orientation and Unit Specific Orientation. A brief overview of the orientation process follows. Hospital Orientation is a 2 days program prepared by the Human Resources Department which consists of a formal classroom orientation and a physical tour of the facilities that is designed to acquaint all new employees to the hospital, its policies and procedures. Introductory classes on the culture of Kuwait will be given during this period. General Nursing Orientation is a 3 days competency based program designed to orient new nursing employees to Nursing Affairs. The CE prepares and implements an orientation program for the newly appointed staff, based on his/her competency skills. Assessments of individual abilities may take place and individual Competency Assessment Form will be given to the new staff after the General Nursing Orientation. Unit Specific Orientation focuses on unit-specific competencies and to provide the new staff with patient care opportunities that enable them to demonstrate competencies. Nursing Department created Preceptorship Program designed as a process to introduce the orientee to the professional nurse role on one-to-one basis with the RN Preceptor. The Preceptor will assist in developing/evaluating the orientee's professional practice and skills required to provide nursing care while meeting international standards for minimum of 6 weeks. The Probationary Period begins on the first day of the contract with SIH and extends for 90 days. During this time it is expected that the new staff demonstrate competence for specific technical, critical thinking and communication skills during this time period. Educational Profile Form is given to each nursing staff at the beginning of each calendar year or upon appointment. Mandatory Annual Competency Training are those that are required by the hospital, international standards, or other licensing agencies for all nursing service employees. Nursing Committees and Special Projects was formulated in order to maintain continuous professional development in the nursing department. Continuing Nursing Education Sessions is conducted by the Nursing Department-CNE at a regular basis, to keep the nursing up-to-date with the latest nursing practice and information. Courses/Trainings are organized according to the need and specialties.

The experience of breastfeeding is special for so many reasons – the joyful bonding with your baby, the cost savings, and the health benefits for both mother and baby. Al Salam International Hospital support women who want to breastfeed by teaching them how to make breastfeeding easy, convenient and enjoyable. During the postpartum hospital stay, a one-on-one support and counseling as well as informative literature are provided by our Breastfeeding Nurse. Also, prenatal visits, help after delivery thru maternity home visit, postpartum phone consults and outpatient visits are available.
